A superb anchorage for Kabaal has been found near the fortress of Kerkyra, Corfu’s main town. Leaving the dinghy in a corner of the small marina we climb the steep and imposing walls of the fortress to enter the sea gate. After crossing the inside of the fortifications we exit the fort through the much more conspicuous gate towards the town, firstly introducing ourselves to the friendly ladies of the ticket booth to make sure they will let us inwhen we return for the night.
On a stormy day we leave Kabaal safely moored in the harbour and exchange the waves for the windy roads in the mountains of Corfu. Old villages with small alleys and stairs show us the typical corfu way of living.
Many houses are ruined by time and by the many earthquakes which occurred in this region. Silent witnesses of the hardship people in rural Greece suffered.
Lefkas too suffered a lot from the trembling earth. The clocktowers, like meccano toys made out of iron beams, still testify of the necessary adjustments to build new structures after the collapse of the old buildings. The collapsed houses seem to have new upperstories since, built up out of wood and corrugated sheet.
Beautiful Paxos steals our heart with its nature trails and laid back atmosphere in the villages.
The Puchi is sailing in the Ionian as well and we find eachother for some nice hikes and biketours and explore a bit of the Ionian together.
The last weeks are spent exploring the waters south of Levkas while the Ionian sea gets more and more deserted until finally we are the only ones enjoying this wonderful sailing area.
We have the most incredible anchorages all to ourselves and fully enjoy swimming and snorkling. As a cherry on the pie we spotted one of the rare species of monk seals which have their territory at Fermikoula, a wild and uninhibited island.
In the end, when we moored Kabaal in Preveza we are surprised by bad weather and a nasty swell so we have to move in the night to drop our anchor elsewhere. The chartplotter is very helpful in those circumstances and we can go back to bed safely. The next morning the weather is calm and sunny. Time to dry our wet clothes and clean up the boat for our winterstop.
