7 New captains on board

Dear blogpost readers & sail- (or Appie) enthousiasts.

This is a guest-post by Albert & Indra. Already two weeks ago we joined the two pensionado’s in La Rochelle to take off to the French islands Ile de Ré, Ile d’Aix, Ile d’Oléron and Rochefort. Soon we found out about the smikkelvacation; no normal eating – only smikkelen, all day everyday- This smikkelen includes French croissants for breakfast, tartatin for lunch and ice cream with French cider for dinner.

Ile de Ré

The first days in Ile de Ré we explored the island by bike and celebrated the 32 years of marriage of Bob & Aleid <3 with a cocktail and a dinner.

The weather could have been better – maar het mocht de pret niet drukken- it was a gorgeous place with old city walls, a drawbridge, salt fields and oyster farms.

The days after here were some big waves coming in, so we had to stay a little longer in the harbor. But, waves and Appie go hand in hand – time for a new wax layer on the surfboard:

Off we go on the surf tandem!!!

And some more bike rides.

La Rochelle

After Ile de Ré we went back to La Rochelle.

In La Rochelle Aleid got her first surf skate lesson from our dude, which was great succes: a new upcoming surf talent is born!!!

Rochefort

Rochefort, also known as Rochefort-sur-mer had a beautiful entrance winding up the river Charante. It used to serve as a naval base and dockyard which closed in 1926.

Exploring the city and having drinks.

After exploring Rochefort we left early with high tide and sunrise. The river has many fishermen’s houses on stilts in all kinds of colors.

Ile d’Aix

We visited the car-free island Ile d’Aix. The sun came out and so did the anchor in front of the coast of the island – we took the dinghy (rubberbootje) to get there.

Walking all the way around the island seeing bikes with carts (see photo on the left) which are used to do groceries and transport everything.

Ile d’Oléron

Appie even typen

Time for some more naps on the deck before we head back to Holland.

Kisses,

Albert & Indra <3
