5 Inland and Islands

Belle île, Vannes, Golfe du Morbihan and Ile d’Yeu

The beauty of Brittany is both found at the Coastal Islands like Belle Île and Ile d’Yeu as in the natural harbour of the Golfe de Morbihan with over 40 islands and the medieval city of Vannes.

The Golfe has an extreme current , at it’s entrance and throughout most of the bay, resulting in our highest ground speed so far, 12.1 knots!

At Vannes, a beautiful medieval city situated at the far end of the bay, we came across the Samba, after the legends of Dartel and Spicy Lady in Nieuwpoort more Grevelingen friends to enjoy some wonderful nights together.

Belle Île
To enter the harbour of Le Palais, Belle Ile, you have to wait for high tide before you can enter the bassin. This always results in an exodus and thereafter an entry of many yachts at the same time expertly assisted by stewards in ribs who will push you in the right direction. The spectacle gets even better when the large delivery ship from Vannes enters the bassin backwards with less then a meter space on both sides making the tanned sailors look a few shades paler around the nose when it passes their yachts.

The Islands are best explored by bike, beautiful backroads and dreamy villages make a romantic scenery which is worthwhile to explore.

Ile d’Yeu

Flatter then its larger sister, this island makes biking a lot less strenuous. At the south coast we found lovely beaches enclosed by steep rocks. The charming unspoiled village of St Sauveur on the middle of the Island has a beautiful old church and a bar-tabac which propelled you back to the seventies upon entering. The cars on the island completed this deja vue experience.
